Is Baptism Essential or Necessary for Salvation?

Let’s look at a few key verses in this study:

Mark 16:16

Ÿ         “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” - NKJV

Ÿ         "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” -  NASU

Ÿ         “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.” - ASV

Ÿ          "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” - NAS

Ÿ         “ He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” - RSV

Ÿ         “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.” - TEV

Ÿ         “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” - NIV

Ÿ         “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” - KJV

þ      Notice the conjunction “and?”  It ties believing and baptism together.  You cannot separate the two.  It is obvious that one must believe and be baptized to be saved.

þ      You cannot just say you must be baptized without believing nor can you say you must believe without being baptized for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38).

The grammar here definitely ties the two aspects of salvation together.  Let me explain:

Ÿ         A car dealer once made an announcement on the radio (or television).  This is what he said:

“The first one to come down to my lot with a bushel of wheat and a bushel of corn will get a brand new car of their choosing.”

Now, what would you do? Bring only a bushel of wheat? Bring only a bushel of corn?  I don’t think so.  You would in all probability bring both.  You know that the car dealer gave specific instructions on what the deal was.  If you only brought one of the two items, you would not get the car.  It’s that simple.

The Lord in a way made a deal with us.  He died on the cross that we might have eternal life.  He also said to pick up our crosses and follow him.  What that basically meant was we are to be dead to ourselves and alive to Christ.  When someone carried a cross in the days of the Apostles, they were going to meet their death.  The Lord also said if we love him, we should do what he says.

Ÿ         Let’s study further to show that it was commanded by Christ to the Apostles by looking in our next session:

Matt 28:18-20

Ÿ          Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." - NIV

Ÿ         And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. - NKJV

Ÿ         And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." - NASU

Ÿ         And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. - KJV

Ÿ         And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth.  Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:  teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. - ASV

Ÿ         And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. "  - NAS

Matt 28:18-20

Ÿ         And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age." - RSV

Ÿ         Jesus drew near and said to them, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age." - TEV

J       Notice that Jesus commanded the apostles to teach, baptize and have all nations observe all things he commanded them to. Are we any better than the Apostles that we can ignore God’s word? No, and we are not any less either.  God loves us all and wants all of us to be saved. But it is our choice whether we obey the Gospel or not.  Obedience is essential to salvation.  I believe that is without argument to all believers.  Please remember that the Apostles walked and talked with our dear savior.  They learned directly from Him.

þ      One question people usually ask is:  “What about the thief on the cross?”  Remember first of all Christ was not yet resurrected from the dead, nor did he ascend on high at this moment, and it was not yet Pentecost (the beginning of the New Testament Church - That is Christ’s church - see Acts Chapter 2).  Please remember from Matthew 28:18-20 that Jesus had the power or authority in Heaven and on earth to forgive.  Can you personally forgive someone for his or her sins and give them eternal life?  Of course not!  See John 17:2 - power over all flesh.

þ      Another point I could make is the fact that we do not know if the thief on the cross ever received any sort of baptism.  We cannot honestly prove or disprove this fact.  I do know that he did not receive the baptism that occurred on Pentecost because of the obvious fact that he was no longer physically alive.

þ      Another thing I have heard people say on the subject of baptism is: “That is works saving you!”  I ask this question:  When someone “accepts Christ into his heart and repents,” doesn’t that show actions or works?”  First of all you cannot have faith without producing works.  And also by your works, you show your faith.  Remember Abraham was justified by both faith and works. To see this point all you have to do is read and study the book of James!

Now, that Christ told the Apostles to teach, baptize, and have all nations observe commandments of Christ, let’s now turn to Acts of the Apostles in our next section.
The Book of Acts

Ÿ         Please look at Acts 2:38

Ÿ         Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - NIV

Ÿ         Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - NKJV

Ÿ         Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - NASU

Ÿ         Then Peter said unto them,  Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” - KJV

Ÿ         And Peter (said) unto them, “Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - ASV

Ÿ         And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - RSV

Ÿ         Peter said to them, "Each one of you must turn away from his sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, the Holy Spirit.” -TEV

Ÿ         And Peter said to them, "Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” - NAS

Ÿ         HALLEY’S BIBLE HANDBOOK SAYS THIS ABOUT BAPTISM:

Ÿ         Initial rite in becoming a Christian.  It’s mention here is quite conspicuous.  Jesus commanded it     (Matt. 28:19)

Ÿ         Three thousand at Pentecost were baptized (Acts 2:38)

Ÿ         Samaritans (Acts 8:12)

Ÿ         Saul (Acts 9:18; 22:16)

Ÿ         Cornelius (Acts 10:47,48)

Ÿ         Lydia (Acts 16:15)

Ÿ         Philippian Jailer (Acts 16:33)

Ÿ         Corinthians (18:8)

Ÿ         Ephesians (19:5)

Ÿ         See also Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12

«      Notice in Acts 2:38, that Peter said Repent and be baptized every one of you.  No exceptions were given.  Peter did not pick out a handful of exceptions.  He merely stated the truth.  He did not say every one of you except for Mark, Larry, Bill, and Mary.

O       Notice also, that baptism is for the remission of sins.  In another words, it is for the forgiveness of sins.  One can ask the question:  Isn’t Christ’s blood redemption for our sins?  Of course! However, you cannot take the physical or literal blood of Christ and wash yourself.  Therefore, the element  (water) of baptism is a representation of his blood.

Let us illustrate the conversion of a sinner or a person who is lost:

Ÿ         The bible teaches five basic steps in becoming a Christian or being saved:

Ÿ         1.  HEAR the word of God.  Romans 10:17; Matthew 7:24-27; Revelation 2:7

Ÿ         2.  BELIEVE that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that there is a God.  John 20:31; Mark 16:16;

Ÿ              Hebrews 11:6; (not faith only - James 2:24; John 12:42)

Ÿ         3.  REPENT of your sins.  Acts 2:38; 3:19; 17:30; Luke 13:3

Ÿ         4.  CONFESS with your mouth publicly that Jesus Christ is Lord, the Son of God.

Ÿ                Matthew 10:32-33; Romans 10:9-10; Acts 8:36-38

Ÿ         5.  BE BAPTIZED for the remission of Sins. Acts 2:38; Mark 16:16; Acts 22:16

F      After these steps have bee followed, one has been added to the Lord’s church and now is saved.  The individual also must remain faithful and obedient to the Gospel to make sure that they do not fall from Grace.

Ÿ         Now let’s go back to the Acts of the Apostles:

Ÿ         First lets give the definition of the word “baptism”:

Ÿ         NT:908 baptisma (bap'-tis-mah); from NT:907; immersion, baptism (technically or figuratively):    KJV - baptism.

(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright (c) 1994, Biblesoft and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Ÿ         NT:907 baptizo (bap-tid'-zo); from a derivative of NT:911; to immerse, submerge; to make overwhelmed (i.e. fully wet); used only (in the N. T.) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism: - KJV - Baptist, baptize, wash.

(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright (c) 1994, Biblesoft and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Ÿ         NT:911 bapto (bap'-to); a primary verb; to overwhelm, i.e. cover wholly with a fluid; in the N. T. only in a qualified or specially, sense, i.e. (literally) to moisten (a part of one's person), or (by implication) to stain (as with dye):  KJV - dip.

Ÿ         see also Luke 3:3

Acts 13:24

Ÿ         “Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.” - NIV

Ÿ         “After John first preached before His coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.” - NKJV

Ÿ         “after John had proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.” - NASU

Ÿ         “When John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.” - KJV

Ÿ         “when John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.” - ASV

Ÿ         “after John had proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.” - NAS

Ÿ         “after John had proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.” - NAS

Ÿ         “Before Jesus began his work, John preached to all the people of Israel that they should turn from their sins and be baptized.” - TEV

Þ      Notice in Acts 13:24 says that John preached the baptism (immersion/water) of repentance.  This is a strong indication that one needs to be baptized to be fully repentant and for the remission of sins.

Ä      Acts 19:4 reiterates this point and stresses they should believe on Christ Jesus (after they were already baptized by John).  Verse 5 says they were baptized again; however, this time it was into Christ.

Acts 19:4-5

Ÿ         Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.  - NIV

Ÿ         Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus." When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  - NKJV

Ÿ         Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  - NASU

Ÿ         Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.  When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. - KJV

Ÿ         “And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus. “ And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.  - ASV

Acts 19:4-5

Ÿ         “And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus. And when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” - NAS

Ÿ         “And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” - RSV

Ÿ         “Paul said, "The baptism of John was for those who turned from their sins; and he told the people of Israel to believe in the one who was coming after him--that is, in Jesus." When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” - TEV

Ø       Notice in Acts 22:16, it says “and now why tarriest thou? arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.”

J       You call on the Lord when you make your conversion.  The bible does not teach  that you can be converted without baptism.  We do not merely accept Jesus into our hearts to be saved because the bible does not teach this.  Therefore, it is not scriptural.  We are added by baptism (Acts 2:41) to the Lord’s church.  You cannot be saved unless you are in the body (church) of Christ. In the book of James, it say’s that we are justified by faith and works as was Abraham.  God did not want us to be lukewarm.  That kind of attitude is unsuitable for His palette and as Revelation says, he will spew them out of his mouth.

Romans 6:4

Ÿ         “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”- KJV

cf. John 3:1-7 (born again).  Notice to walk in newness of life was preceded by baptism!!!

A co-worker of mine doesn’t believe this is talking about  or teaching water baptism here in Romans Chapter 6.  Let’s look at the original Greek text using Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance.  The number is 908, the word is baptisma from baptizo:  to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet).  If this is not talking about water baptism, how does one get fully wet?! The word baptizo also applies to Romans 6:3 twice.

Ephesians 4:5

Ÿ         “One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism.” (baptizo, baptisma).

Ÿ         “ heís Kúrios mía pístis hén báptisma.” (the actual Koine Greek)

(Interlinear Transliterated Bible. Copyright (c) 1994 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         Notice there is only one baptism.  God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14.33).  If we truly have an opened mind and are willing to study in spirit and truth, then we will learn what is correct.

F      Again, notice there is only  one baptism.  That is the baptism for the remission of sins and into Christ.  So, when someone tells me that baptism in Romans 6 does not refer to water (the element) baptism, they are in error.  I realize someone might use the argument of types.  But let’s not assume things.

Ÿ         If you wish to talk about types.  There are two types or like figures of baptism in the Old Testament:  The Exodus out of Egypt by the parting of the Red Sea and those that were saved in Noah’s Ark.  We will talk about these later.

Colossians 2:12

Ÿ         “Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.” - KJV

Ÿ         “having been buried with him in baptism, wherein ye were also raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.” - ASV

Ÿ         “For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ through your faith in the active power of God, who raised him from death.” - TEV

ý    Again this is “water” baptism.  Notice, how Christ lived here on earth, was baptized (immersed in water), tortured for our sins on the cross and was resurrected.  In this manner we are buried in baptism and are the new man in Christ.

1 Peter 3:21

Ÿ          “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but      the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:” - KJV

Ÿ          “And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,”  -  NAS

Ÿ          “Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you -- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience -- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,”  -  NASU

Ÿ           Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” - RSV

Ÿ          This is referring to Noah (being the eight person) and his family being saved by water.  This is what we call a type.

Ÿ         TYPE: a figure, representation, or symbol of something to come, as in an event in the Old Testament that foreshadows another in the New Testament (The American Heritage Dictionary).

Ÿ         Think about it, Noah and his family were saved by water and without question the Spirit of God.  So we also are saved by water and the spirit (John 3).

Ÿ         A cross-reference you may want to look at is Ephesians 5:26, the word here in the Greek is loutron, a bath, i.e., (fig) baptism, washing.  Eph 5:26 - “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.”- KJV

ý    Have you noticed that “baptism now saves you?”  Baptism is part of our salvation.

Hebrews 6:1-3

Ÿ         “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.  And this will we do, if God permit.” - KJV

Ÿ         Notice the last part of this verse says: “And this will we do, if God permit.” - KJV

Ÿ         We should always do what God commands whether it be a direct order or by example!

Ÿ         Many people do or will misinterpret Hebrews 6:1.  What it is saying is that these things should be so simple to understand that we need to move forward in our spiritual growth.

Ÿ         Baptism is the beginning of starting over as a new man.  Everything is forgotten that was before.  The slate has been wiped clean by our precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Matthew 3:14-17

Ÿ         “But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.  And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:  And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”  KJV

Ÿ         “But John tried to make him change his mind. "I ought to be baptized by you," John said, "and yet you have come to me!"  But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires." So John agreed. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. Then heaven was opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God coming down like a dove and lighting on him. Then a voice said from heaven, "This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.”  - TEV

Ÿ         No professed Christian will argue this point:  We are to walk in the likeness of Christ, we are to strive to be like Him. Here is our example of our Savior leading the way!  He was baptized in water and the Spirit of God descended on Him.  (think - born again = baptism(water) + Holy Spirit!)

F      Notice also, it was not until Jesus came up out of the water that God made the statement that he was well pleased.!

Ÿ         The New Bible Commentary* says that this was a symbolic recapitulation of the Exodus from Egypt, performed by Jesus the new Israel and bringer of the new Exodus of Salvation. (cf. 1 Cor. 10:4)

(*by Guthrie, Motyer, Stibbs, Wiseman - GUIDEPOSTS)

Matthew 20:20-23

Ÿ         “Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.  And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.  But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.  And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.” - KJV  (cf. Mark 10:38-40)

Ÿ         Notice that Jesus told the mother of Zebedee’s children that she will drink of the cup (Lord’s Supper?) and be baptized with the baptism of Christ, but where the people sit in the after-life is up to God?!

Ÿ         Time after time when people are converted, baptism is an element of salvation.

Here are some thoughts on baptism by others:

Ÿ         Baptism is an ordinance by which we join ourselves to the Lord in covenant and communion; and so is suffering for Christ, Ezek 20:37; Isaiah 48:10.

(from Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible: New Modern Edition, Electronic Database. Copyright (c) 1991 by Hendrickson Publishers, Inc.)

Ÿ         Christian baptism implies grafting into fellowship or union with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit;  (from Fausset's Bible Dictionary, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1998 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         Christian baptism is the seal of gospel doctrine and spiritual renewal.

(from Fausset's Bible Dictionary, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1998 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         Corresponding to His is our baptism of water and the Spirit, the seal of initiatory incorporation with Him (John 3:5)

(from Fausset's Bible Dictionary, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1998 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         The early Greek ecclesiastical writers show that immersion was employed (compare Barnabas, XI, 11): "We go down into the water full of sins and filth, and we come up bearing fruit in the heart."

(from International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1996 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         The submergence and emergence of immersion thus, according to Paul, symbolize the death and burial to sin on the one hand and the resurrection to the new life in Christ on the other.

(from International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1996 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         "Baptism is the grave of the old man, and the birth of the new. As he sinks beneath the baptismal waters, the believer buries there all his corrupt affections and past sins; as he emerges thence, he rises regenerate, quickened to new hopes and new life."

(from International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1996 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         Thus Jacobus (Congregationalist) in the Standard Bible Dictionary says: "We have no record in the New Testament of the baptism of infants." Scott (Presbyterian) in the one-volume Hastings Dictionary of the Bible says: "The New Testament contains no explicit reference to the baptism of infants or young children."

(from International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1996 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         Plummer (Church of England), Hastings, Dictionary of the Bible (five volumes), says: "The recipients of Christian baptism were required to repent and believe."

(from International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1996 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         The infant who dies un-baptized is saved without baptism.

(from International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1996 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         immersion alone was commanded by Jesus and practiced in the New Testament times.

(from International Standard Bible Encyclopaedia, Electronic Database Copyright (c)1996 by Biblesoft)

Ÿ         BAPTISM

The visual picture of baptism represents (1) cleansing from the sin of the old life; (2) dying to the old life and being born to a new life; and (3) a sign of commitment or allegiance to a new Master or way of life. This visual picture of an inward decision is best summed up in the sentence "I am not ashamed." Baptism is the believer's declaration to the world that Christ is the standard by which he or she intends to live.  Copyright 1999 (c) by Charles F. Stanley. All rights reserved.

Ÿ         BAPTISM

Another reason a believer should be baptized is that Jesus commanded us to be baptized, and following in obedience should be a part of every believer's life.

Mark 1:1-5

Ÿ         The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.  The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.  John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.  And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.  -  KJV (cf. Luke 3:3)

Ÿ        Notice that John baptized people for the remission of sins, this included repentance and confession of sins.  How one can not agree that baptism is for the remission of sins is beyond me. (cf. Acts 2:38)

v    Just believing does not remit your sins!  So how can one be forgiven unless they are baptized?!!!

Mark 16:16

Ÿ         He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. - KJV

Ÿ         I know that I have already used this passage in the first part of this article; however, I wish to illustrate and make a point.

Ÿ         First, most people believe all you have to have is faith.  Of course, the book of James says faith and works go hand in hand, they work together.  If you have not read and studied the book of James, I encourage you to do so!

Ÿ         Now, lets show what people appear or want Mark 16:16 to say:

“If you believe and are not baptized you shall be saved and if you do not believe you will be damned.”

Ÿ         They do not include baptism in the salvation picture.  Note:  Let’s use their argument by using their reasoning:

“If you are baptized and do not believe you shall be saved and if you are not baptized you shall be damned.”

v      You cannot use their logic, it does not work!  You cannot separate the two!  You must both believe and be baptized.  They are not exclusive, they are inclusive of one another.

Luke 3:12-13

Ÿ         Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.”  -  KJV

Ÿ         Notice, the Publicans  asked the Master:  What shall we do?  He told them exact no more than which is appointed you.  Remember they came to be baptized.  Yes, they were told to be honest in their business dealings.

Ÿ         We too are also to be honest in what we teach and preach.  We cannot just go by our emotions.  In another words, we just can’t go out and do whatever makes us feel good and happy.  Salvation is a serious matter.  It is not to be taken lightly.

John 3:1-7

Ÿ         “There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:  The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.  Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.  Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.  That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”   -  KJV

Ÿ         I think the majority of believers believe you must be born again to be saved.  If you believe this to be true, then we must ask the question:  How does one become born again?

Ÿ         All we have to do is look at verse five:  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

(cf. Romans 6:4; Colossians 2:12)

Ÿ         Notice the element:  water Notice the power:  Spirit

Ÿ         This chapter in verses 1-7 is talking about baptism!

Ÿ         The word “water” here in the Greek is water as in taking a shower.

Ÿ         NT:5204 hudor (hoo'-dore); genitive case, hudatos (hoo'-dat-os), etc.; from the base of NT:5205; water (as if rainy) literally or figuratively:  KJV - water.

(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright (c) 1994, Biblesoft and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Ÿ         NT:5205 huetos (hoo-et-os'); from a primary huo (to rain); rain, especially a shower:  KJV - rain.

(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright (c) 1994, Biblesoft and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

Ÿ         You can think of the type of baptism Noah went through!  Remember 1 Peter 3:21 (Reread to Check).

Ÿ         We can think in this sense that in water baptism the former man serving  sin was erased and the new man serving Christ is born anew. In the same sense that all those in Noah’s time were wiped out except eight souls.  Those eight souls were saved by the like figure of baptism.

Ÿ         Please don’t teach people that they do not need to be baptized to be saved!  Do you want those people to be condemned as the lost people in Noah’s time?  We cannot allow ourselves to be liberal when we are talking about the destination of our eternal souls.  It is always better to exercise on the side of caution. Remember we all will be held accountable for our actions.  So, if you are teaching people about salvation, You better really study the truth first!

Ÿ         If John 3:1-7 is not talking about baptism; then the only alternative would be to reenter our mother’s womb.  It is impossible!  Therefore this alternative will not work.  One must be baptized to enter the kingdom of God!

Acts 2:41 (37-47)  Key Verses 38, 41, 47

Acts 2:37-47

37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

43 And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. - KJV

Ÿ         Notice they were added, They did not merely join or become members by being voted in.  We are added to the Lord’s church by baptism.  That is we are added by being born again.

Ÿ         I encourage the reader to read the whole book of Acts, especially Chapter 2.  This was the beginning of the New Testament Church! That is the church that Jesus paid the cost for with His blood!

Ÿ         In Acts 2:44, it says: “And all that believed were together, and had all things common.” Isn’t that beautiful that the Christians all believed the same way?  Nearly two thousand years of man-made doctrines have divided multitudes.  All I am asking the reader is to be truly open-minded and to pray and to study in spirit and truth.  Yearn to learn the truth!

Ÿ         We are added to God’s kingdom by baptism!  Remember John 3:1-7 and Acts 2:41.

v      I am sorry to say, if you are not in God’s kingdom, then friend you are lost!

Acts 8:12-13

Ÿ         “But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.  Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles [1]and signs which were done.”  -  KJV

Ÿ         Here we have an example of a man who practiced sorcery and astonished people into believing he had the power of God.  These people believed he was someone special.

Ÿ         Now notice: When the people heard Philip preaching about the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they believed him and were baptized!  They were converted.  Remember Mark 16:16, if not read it again.

Ÿ         Then Simon who was respected earlier had come to realize that he was nothing compared to the kingdom of God and Jesus Christ.  He was pricked in his heart.  He believed and was baptized!  Then Simon saw some amazing miracles.

Ÿ         It appears that every time there is a conversion, it involves believing and baptism together.  They seem to always be inclusive.

Ÿ         We have so many examples of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).

*Note:  Simon did not receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit as the Apostles had.  He did however receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  That is the indwelling of the Spirit.  He thought he could buy the special gifts that the Apostles had. Because of this, he was told to pray that his heart might be right with God and to be forgiven of this transgression. Simon was repentant of this because we know that he was afraid and asked Peter to pray for him.  We should learn by  this example that when someone is first converted or added to the Lord’s church that they are but a babe in Christ.  In addition, it is our duty to instruct and correct by scripture out of love for that newly born again person.  It is evident that we need obedience and a sincere faith, to be right with God.

THE ETHIOPIAN EUNUCH - ACTS 8:26-39

26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. - KJV

Ÿ          Notice in this passage that the Ethiopian Eunuch was reading from Isaiah, the book that foretold the coming of Christ.  Philip explained this to the eunuch and preached to him the Gospel of Christ.

v      Now notice in verse 36:  as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?” - KJV

v      This man was preached the Gospel of Christ and knew what he had to do to be converted/born again.

v      He made a confession that Christ was the Son of God.  Then they went into the water and Philip baptized the eunuch.

v      This is an example of a true conversion to Christianity.  He did not merely say that I accept Christ into my heart.  The scriptures do not teach that type of conversion.

v      ONE MUST BELIEVE AND BE BAPTIZED!

CONVERSION OF SAUL - ACTS 9:1-22

“And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.  And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?  And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.  And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.  And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.  And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.  And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.  And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,  And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.  Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:  And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name. But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:  For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.  And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.  And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.  And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?  But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.”   - KJV

v      Notice that Paul asked what he must do.  The Lord told him to go to the city (Damascus) and he will be told what he must do. (verse 6)

v      Now, Paul was blind for three days.  Saul was to suffer for the Lord’s sake.

v      He met Ananias and the Lord told Ananias  in a vision, inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus.

v      Ananias put his hands on Saul to restore Saul’s sight.  “Scales” fell from Saul’s eye as he received his sight, Saul arose, and was baptized. (verse 18)

v      After this Saul preached Christ in the synagogues, that He (Christ) is the Son of God!

v      Again, we have an example of true conversion.  By what method?  Belief and baptism!  There is no other means.

v      Isn’t it peculiar that each time that there is a conversion that baptism is a part of it?!!!

CONVERSION OF CORNELIUS - ACTS 10:1-48

Ÿ         You the reader, will have to read this entire passage for yourself.  I think it is unnecessary for me to write it for you. If you would just open your bible and read this passage alongside of my comments, we will do just fine discussing this event.  Key verses in this discussion are as follows:  Acts 10:6, 22, 33, 42, 47, and 48.

Ÿ         Cornelius was a Gentile who believed in God and was devout.

Ÿ         He received a vision which told him to find Peter in order to do what he ought.

Ÿ         Cornelius was a good man yet he lacked what was necessary to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.

Ÿ         Cornelius was to hear all things that are commanded of God. (verse 33)

Ÿ         “Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?” - Acts 10:47 (KJV)

Ÿ         Even though Cornelius and the Gentiles were under this special circumstance of receiving the Holy Spirit before baptism, Peter asked them: “Can any man forbid water.  People today are basically forbidding water when they say that you do not have to be baptized to be saved.  This is a falsehood, whether intentional or not.

Ÿ         Now notice in verse 48:  “And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.” - KJV

Ä      Notice!  Baptism is a commandment!  We are suppose to obey the commandments of God! Remember Acts 10:33.  Ecclesiastes 12:13 says this:  “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” - KJV.  The NASU renders it this way: “The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person.”

þ      If we are not obedient and faithful, then we are in trouble.

ACTS 11:16-18

“Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.  Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?  When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.” -  KJV  (cf. Acts 2:38)

þ      Peter defends himself of the criticism he received for mingling with the Gentiles (Cornelius and the outpouring of the Holy spirit).  Remember Cornelius and the Gentiles believed, received the Holy Spirit and were baptized. (cf. Acts 10:47-48)

þ      This outpouring of the Holy Spirit that happened here was about ten years after Pentecost.  This shows that was not an everyday occurrence as some might believe today.  This was to show the Jews that salvation is given to all men in Christ Jesus.

THE CONVERSION OF LYDIA AT PHILIPPI - ACTS 16:11-15

“Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; And from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days. And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a riverside, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.  And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.  And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.” - KJV

Ÿ         In verse 13, on the Sabbath (Saturday) the Apostles went out of the city to pray by a riverside and spoke to the women who were gathered together.

Ÿ         In verse 14, God had opened Lydia’s heart so that she truly listened to the words that Paul spoke.

Ÿ         In verse 15, it says: “And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.”

Ÿ         Again, Here is conversion by baptism, she already believed in God before this but she needed to be baptized to fulfill her conversion.  (cf. John 3:1-7, born again)

CONVERSION OF THE PHILIPPIAN JAILER - ACTS 16:27-33

“And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.  But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here. Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,  And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house.  And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway.”

Ÿ         VERSE 30. The keeper of the prison asked what he must do to be saved!

Ÿ         VERSE 31. Paul and Silas told him that he should believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.  So here we have part of the salvation equation.

Ÿ         VERSE 32. Then Paul and Silas taught the Word of the Lord to the jailer and his household.

Ÿ         VERSE 33. Notice here, The jailer and his household were baptized!  (cf. Acts 11:14; 16:15; 18:8)

v      These people : a)  Heard the Word of God.   b) Believed.  c)  Repented. d)  Confessed Christ  and                                      e) were Baptized!

v      VERSE 34: “And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.”  They rejoiced in what?  Their Conversion!

v      Of note should be that the Philippian jailer was baptized the same hour that he heard the Word. They did not delay this necessary course of action.  Too many people today arrange for some big ceremony once a week or once a month. Salvation is a serious matter; we can not delay when someone wants to live for Christ.

THE CONVERSION OF CRISPUS - ACTS 18:7-11

“And he departed thence, and entered into a certain man's house, named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house joined hard to the synagogue.  And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.  Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:  For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.  And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.” - KJV

Ÿ         Note Crispus, “believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.” (verse 8)

Ÿ         Again we have believing and baptism together.  This happened after Paul taught them and he taught for a year and a half in Corinth.  Paul was a persuasive speaker.  I believe he caused more Corinthians to be converted although the only Corinthians he baptized were Crispus and Gaius.  (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:14).  He also baptized Stephanas and his household in the Roman province of Achaia.  He does not remember baptizing anyone else. Silas probably did the baptizing, we cannot confirm or deny this.

PAUL INSTRUCTS DISCIPLES AT EPHESUS - ACTS 19:1-6

“And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.  And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.  Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.  When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.” - KJV

Ÿ         These Ephesians were baptized incorrectly, so they were re-baptized by believing on Jesus Christ   (verse 4). After they were baptized, the Apostles laid hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost

Ÿ         Have you figured out the pattern for salvation yet?

u      Notice: They believed on Jesus Christ and were baptized!

Ä      The Apostles constantly taught the teachings of Christ so people believed and were baptized!

PAUL RETELLS THE STORY OF HIS CONVERSION - ACTS 22:12-16

12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

13 Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.  -  KJV

Ÿ         Notice in verse 16:  Ananias asked Paul why he tarried (in other words: What are you waiting for?!).  Stand up and be baptized calling on the name of the Lord!

Ÿ         There are none of these new age idioms of “I accept Christ into my heart.”  We call on the name of the Lord in Baptism.  It is his seal of redemption for us.  The representation of His blood cleansing us!

Ÿ         Paul heard the Word, he believed, he repented, he confessed Christ and was baptized.  He was a devout and faithful servant! (cf. Heb. 10:22; 2 Cor. 7:1; 1 John 1:7; 1 John 1:9; 1 Cor, 6:11)

Ÿ         Time after time, when people desired to be converted, they asked what they should do and the response included baptism!

Ÿ         Hebrews 10:22 says this: “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.” - KJV

Ÿ         The word washed   (SEC 3068) here means to bathe the whole person.

Ÿ         Definition: louo (loo'-o); a primary verb; to bathe (the whole person; whereas NT:3538 means to wet a part only, and NT:4150 to wash, cleanse garments exclusively): - KJV - wash.

Ÿ         1 Corinthians 6:11 says this: “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, (SEC 628), but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” - KJV

Ÿ         Washed = in Greek; NT:628 apolouo (ap-ol-oo'-o); from NT:575 and NT:3068 (SEC); to wash fully, i.e. (figuratively) have remitted (reflexively):  KJV - wash (away).

Ÿ         Sanctified (SEC 37) = in Greek; hagiazo (hag-ee-ad'-zo); from (SEC 40); to make holy, i.e. (ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate: KJV - hallow, be holy, sanctify.

Ÿ         Justified (SEC 1344) = in Greek; dikaioo (dik-ah-yo'-o); from (SEC 1342); to render (i.e. show or regard as) just or innocent: KJV - free, justify (-ier), be righteous.

1 Corinthians 1:13-16

13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. - KJV

Ÿ         Christ is not divided; Mankind has ruined the beauty of unity by denominationalism.

Ÿ         He is the head of His church.

Ÿ         We are baptized in the name of Christ not some mortal man.

Ÿ         Paul baptized Stephanas (household); Crispus and Gaius.

Ÿ         It is without doubt that Baptism is the means of being added to the Lord’s church.

Ÿ         Notice what the passage is saying.  First: Christ does not want any of us to perish (John 3:16).  There aren’t different rules of salvation for different people.  We all are subject to baptism if we wish to be in Christ and make it to Heaven.

Ÿ         Second. Christ was crucified for us, Paul was not crucified for us.  No man was. We are to follow Christ’s steps, not anyone else's.  As He was baptized, we also must go through the watery graves of baptism (Romans 6)

Ÿ         Third. Remember the Father said of Jesus, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17 - KJV). Jesus did everything that we are suppose to do.  Don’t you want to God to say to you on the Day of Judgment “Well done my faithful servant?” (See Mt 25:23) or do you wish to hear: “Depart from me, I know you not?!” (see Matthew 7:23; 25:41)

Ÿ         Entrance into Heaven is pass or fail.  There is no curve as we have in a classroom setting or on some school test.  Our life is our trial!  Either you’ll be there or you won’t.  Why take the risk of losing your soul?  (see Matthew 16:26; Mark 8:36; Luke 9:25)

Ÿ         Remember straight and narrow is the way (see Matthew 7:13-14).  Few find it and even fewer stick to it.  Many are called, but few are chosen (see Matthew 22:14).  Take a look around you.  How many people do you see or think are truly Christians? Take even a deeper look at yourself! Ask yourself these questions:

1.        Have I heard the true word of God?

2.        Do I believe that there is a God?

3.        Have I truly repented of my sins?

4.        Have I confessed that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? - 1 John 4:15

5.        And have you confessed Him in front of witnesses?  Luke 12:8; Matthew 10:32

6.        Was I baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost for the remission my sins?  - Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:38

Ÿ         If you haven’t answered yes to all of these questions, then friend, you are in jeopardy of losing an inheritance into the kingdom of Heaven.  In fact, you aren’t even in the kingdom of God if you haven’t answered yes to:  Hearing, Believing, Repenting, Confession, and Baptism.

Ÿ         These are the steps you must follow to be a Christian and then you must live the rest of your short (very short) life serving God.  Life is short, you never know when it will end.  Wouldn’t it be sad to fall short and not make it to Heaven because of a closed heart and mind?  Please be obedient and serve God as the Apostles and the early church did. Think of Paul and how he talked about his physical life being nothing but serving the Lord is everything.  Don’t be stubborn.  God is not a respecter of persons.  He doesn't make intelligence, physical appearance or status in life a prerequisite.  Believe and be baptized for your eternal soul’s sake.

1 Corinthians 12:13

“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” - KJV  (cf. Romans 6:5)

Ÿ         Notice that the Apostle Paul says “we all.  Not just part, some, half, or three-quarters, but all baptized into one body (Christ’s church).  There are no exceptions, you cannot be in Christ unless you are baptized into Christ's death.  (Romans 6:3-4).

Ÿ         Notice the following verse:  “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” - Matt 16:24 (KJV)

Ÿ         It is known that the cross signified death.  Christ basically was saying follow me to the point of death.  Through baptism, we become dead to ourselves.  As we arise out of the water, we live in the newness of life in Christ. (cf. Romans 6:4)

Ÿ         Again we are told that we are to be baptized (immersed in water) and to drink into one Spirit.

       (cf. John 3:1-7)

Ÿ         We all must be born again.  We must be born of water (baptism) and Spirit (Holy Spirit).

Ÿ         Jesus said He is the vine and we are the branches.  Notice, there is only one true vine and only the branches that abide in Him can be true branches.  Those who have baptized into that one body (Christ’s) are the true branches.  Those who have not been baptized are dangling off some bush that will be thrown into the fire because it is not producing true fruit! (see Matthew 3:10)

Galatians 3:27

“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” - KJV

(cf. Romans 6:3; Romans 13:14)

Ÿ         Ask yourself this question:  How do you put on Christ?

ANSWER:  BY BAPTISM !!!

Ÿ         To be a Christian, you have to be in Christ and put on Christ.  The only way you can do this is by going through the watery grave of baptism.

ECCLESIASTES 12:13

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” - KJV

Ÿ         BAPTISM IS A COMMANDMENT !!! (cf. Matthew 28:18-20)

HEBREWS 5:8-9

“Though he were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him.” - KJV

Ÿ         Jesus was and still is perfect.  We are to walk in His footsteps and that includes baptism!

Ÿ         Jesus is the author of eternal salvation; therefore, we should be baptized also.

REVELATION 7:13-14

“And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” - KJV (cf. Isaiah 1:18; 1 John 1:7)

Ÿ         This could be referring to those who are or have been baptized.  I believe it is.

Ÿ         The word “washed” in the Greek means to plunge as in launder clothing (SEC 4150).  Kind of like baptism isn’t it?  Don’t you want to plunge yourself in God’s Word by being baptized fro the remission of your sins?

REVELATION 22:14-15

“Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.” - KJV

Baptism is a commandment! We want to obey God’s commandments so that we might have the right to the tree of life.  Are you convinced yet?  Remember your eternal soul as well as others souls are at stake!  So, beware what you practice and preach!

TYPES OF HUMAN ERROR IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

The following examples depict what happens when humans try to use their own reasoning instead of obeying God.

Ÿ         “And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.  And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.”                   - Leviticus 10:1-2 (KJV)

Ÿ         Apparently Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu thought it didn’t matter what kind of fire to offer. After all fire is fire, right? The problem is the Lord commanded them to offer a certain type of fire and they didn’t follow God’s commandment.  We have the same problem today.  People think that you don’t need baptism to be saved; however, we have went over so many scriptures saying that you do (Mark 16:16; Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:38; Acts 22:16, etc).  Do you think God likes a lukewarm attitude?  Revelation 3:16 says this:  “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” -KJV

Ÿ         Sometimes people will say don’t be so “legalistic.”  First of all the word “legalistic” is erroneous, the word is “legalism,”  which means a strict adherence to law.  Friend, I don’t think that word applies to scripture, but I do believe it applies to the laws of the land.  Christians are suppose to obey the laws of the land (read Romans 8 and 13).  The word I like to use is “scriptural,”  which means: 1)  Of or pertaining to writing; written.  2)  with a capital S Abbr. Script.  of, relating to , based upon, or contained in the scriptures.

Ÿ         If you don’t want to obey the scriptures, then you are not being  Scriptural.  If you are not being scriptural, then, you are not obeying God!  What is the whole duty of man?  Ecclesiastes says “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” - Eccl 12:13 (KJV).

TYPES OF HUMAN ERROR IN THE BIBLE:

Ÿ         CAIN                                                              GENESIS 4:3-7

Ÿ         THE BUILDERS OF BABEL                       GENESIS 11:1-9

Ÿ         LOT’S WIFE                                 GENESIS 19:16-26

Ÿ         AARON AND THE JEWS                          EXODUS 32:1-24

Ÿ         KORAH                                                         NUMBERS 16:1-35

Ÿ         MOSES                                                          NUMBERS 20:7-12

Ÿ         ACHAN                                                         JOSHUA 6:18-19; 7:19-26

Ÿ         SAUL                                                             1 SAMUEL 15:1-10

Ÿ         HAMAN                                                       ESTHER 3:5-6

Ÿ         JONAH                                                          JONAH 1:3; 4TH CHAPTER

Ÿ         NAMAAN                                                    II KINGS 5:11

Ÿ         THE JEWS                                                    MATTHEW 16:13-17

Ÿ         PETER                                                            MATTHEW 16:22-23

Ÿ         ANANIAS                                                    ACTS 5:1-5

Ÿ         PAUL                                                             ACTS 26:9-10

Ÿ         The reason I listed these fifteen incidents is because they tried to do things their way. The result was disastrous in most of the cases.  Think of Ananias, he held back and his life was taken!  What may happen if you hold back from baptism?!  Please don’t preach things because they are popular, teach what is true!  Remember, the people asked Peter what they should do?  He said repent and be baptized for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38)

THE PASSOVER

“And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.  For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.”  - Ex 12:22-23 (KJV)

Ÿ         The 12th chapter of Exodus deals with the Passover.  There were nine plagues put upon Pharaoh and the land of Egypt before this last plague.  Pharaoh was rebellious and stubborn as are the people of today.  This final plague would kill all of the firstborn who did not observe the commandment of the Lord.

Ÿ         Aaron had told the people the thing they must do to save their children from the death that will affect the firstborn of all that dwell in the land of Egypt whether man or beast.

Ÿ         Now they were told to do the following things:

1.        Use hyssop  (not any other plant).

2.        Dip it in the blood (from an unblemished lamb).

3.        Dip this hyssop in the blood that was in a basin.

4.        Strike the lintel with the blood from the basin.

5.        Strike the two side posts with the blood from the basin.

6.        They were not to go outside until morning.

Ÿ         Now ask yourself this question:  Would I put my firstborn child in jeopardy?   Absolutely not!  Wouldn’t you follow these instructions to the tee?  You bet you would!

Ÿ         Now I present this question to you:  Since the Bible says “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” - Mark 16:16(KJV), Aren’t you going to believe and be baptized?

Ÿ         Think about it, if the Hebrew people had failed in one of the above instructions, they may have lost their firstborn.  Pharaoh and his people wept of this plague and finally let Moses and his people go.

Ÿ         Salvation is far to serious to gamble.  We should do as those people on the day of Pentecost and repent and be baptized and be added to the Lord’s church.

NOAH AND THE ARK

“Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.” - Gen 6:14 (KJV)

Ÿ         God had told Noah to build an ark out of Gopher wood.  Noah and his family would be saved by this ark that God had told him to build. If you were in Noah’s shoes, would you have used something other than gopher wood?  Now remember your whole family’s lives are on the line.  Without this ark they will be destroyed with the rest of the earth in the great flood.  So, there is no way you would use anything else!  You would use Gopher wood and pitch it inside and out.  You love your family and you want them to be saved.

Ÿ         So the question is:  Is baptism essential to salvation?  Absolutely! This event was a type of baptism. Noah and his family were saved by water in the ark.  “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:” - 1 Peter 3:21 (KJV)

This concludes our study on baptism.  Hopefully, you have prayed before you read this study.  I pray that you will accept God’s truth.  I would like to leave you with a scripture:  “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.” - 1 Sam 15:23 (KJV).  Please don’t be rebellious or stubborn against God’s word. It’s just this simple: believe and be baptized and you shall be saved.
