Likhurwa Church Meeting
Sunday, 22 June, 2003

Stephen Kasenda and I left Blantyre just before 7 AM and traveled to the Wendewende church where we picked up Brother Benet Severe, two of his sons, Christopher and James, and another preacher, Brother Smoke, to guide us to the Likhurwa Village congregation in Phalombe District. Likhurwa is only about 85 kilometers (51 miles) due east from Blantyre. Traveling was pretty slow in some areas due to very poor road conditions. Even so, we arrived in good time, around 9:20. Services were scheduled to begin at 10 AM.

Likhurwa is one of those congregations which Benet has been working with for a number of years. The congregation wanted me for a meeting so Benet arranged for me to attend their worship service on the Lord’s day, 22 June, and preach for the congregation. We had a building completely full. In addition, people were sitting all the way around the building on the outside. The subject was “Worship.“ We could not have asked for an audience to give us their attention any better than that which we received today.

In the photograph, the man who is closest to the front on the right hand side in the blue suit is an elder in the congregation by the name of Brother Iron. However, in addition to being an elder, he is the village chief. When he is serving in his official capacity, he is known as Chief Likhurwa.

Brethren, take a close look at the faces of these people. The smiles and friendly disposition of the Malawians make it a joy to work with them. By the way, how many people do you think are in this photo? Make a guess, and then count them. You might be surprised!

Sometimes, when traveling to a meeting, we are blessed with some beautiful scenery. In photo number 2, you can see a portion of Mount Mulanje in the background. In the center of the picture is the highest point of the mountain. It is over 3,000 meters in elevation. Unfortunately, you cannot see the peak because of the cloud. But, we do see the beauty of the clouds resting upon the mountain, especially the illumination of the cloud which is directly over the highest peak.

Photo number three is one of two streams we had to ford to reach our destination from Wendewende on the road to Likhurwa.
