Lei Greetings
In modern
Hawaii, leis are best known as tokens of arrival and
departure, or as gestures of love and thanks, and are almost
always made of bright Hawaiian flowers. However, the
giving and wearing of leis is an ancient tradition as old as
Hawaii itself. In the old days, leis might be made of
just about anything: native flowers, fragrant leaves, seeds,
feathers, nutshells, even animal bones or teeth. They
weren't just for greetings and departures: leis might be worn
to mark any significant occasion, from a child's birth to a
cherished elder's death |
